HEARING XU SHIYI CHANTING HIS POEMS AT NIGHT

许生五台宾，业白出石壁。
余亦师粲可，身犹缚禅寂。
Mr. Xu resides as a visitor on Wutai Mountain. He is as virtuous and upright as an immortal jumping out of a cliff. I once learned from Seng Can and Hui Ke also, but I am still restrained somehow and not unfettered yet.

何阶子方便，谬引为匹敌。
离索晚相逢，包蒙欣有击。
It is my wish to be aided by your virtues and instructions to accomplish greater achievements. I had always been so lonely and hadn’t have the opportunity to meet you till lately. I hope you can forgive me for that.

诵诗浑游衍，四座皆辟易。
应手看捶钩，清心听鸣镝。
Poems you cite are so unrestrained and elegant that they astound the guests present. A smith is not able to produce a splendid sword unless he is not the least distracted; and a shooter can only shoot the target when he concentrates.

精微穿溟〔氵幸〕，飞动摧霹雳。
陶谢不枝梧，风骚共推激。
The subtlety penetrates the universe, and the grandeur outdoes a thunderbolt. Even Tao Qian and Xie Lingyun would not be able to criticize your works, which rival the masterpieces Feng and Sao.

紫燕自超诣，翠驳谁翦剔？
君意人莫知，人间夜寥阒。
(You are) comparable to the steed Ziyan which excels all other horses, and to the steed Cuiyao which is groomed or branded by no one. Nobody understands you, and the night on the earth is so deadly still.
